To provide top qualified DCD services to the drilling industry Devico and its subsidiaries have established an international group of expert field engineers that supervise directional projects around the globe. Our engineers are highly educated and have been through an extensive training period of one year or more to earn their title. On DCD projects they work together with the drilling contractor to ensure that the operation runs smoothly and efficiently.

The engineers also work with the project geologists to prepare and optimize drilling plans. They can suggest the depth where directional drilling should be started, and calculate how long the correction needs to be to aim the hole towards the target.

The dream of being able to steer boreholes

When professionals in the mining industry started to use borehole survey tools on regular basis approximately 40 years ago, they became aware of borehole deviation. They discovered that most of the holes ended up far from where they were planned. After borehole surveying become a standard procedure and geologists became more and more aware of the deviation problem, their next dream was the ability to steer the borehole to precise targets.

Directional core drilling

Viktor Tokle developed a system for directional core drilling while he was employed by SINTEF (an industrial research foundation) in Trondheim, Norway. The system, which was later dubbed DeviDrill, was launched by Devico in 1988. Since that date, it has been used on various projects in more than 40 different countries around the world. Devico launched the wireline version of the DeviDrill in 2001. The DeviDrill WL allows continuous measurements and core sampling during steering.

The first attempt

Aside from the use of wedges, the first steerable coring system was designed by Craelius and Sulithjelma mines in Norway. They developed a system consisting of a double set of drill rods. The outer rod, which was left hand threaded, held an eccentric bushing in a fixed tool orientation. The outer rod was, in turn, held by an extra rod clamp built onto the drill rig. The system worked, but it was cumbersome and time consuming. The concept was laid aside when the DeviDrill came onto the market in 1988.

The Devico technology was born

Viktor Tokle invented a steerable core barrel that could work on a standard drill string and eliminated the extra left-handed drill rods as well as the extra rod clamp on the drill rig. In order to bring this technology to the market, Viktor Tokle incorporated Devico in 1988.

The wireline improvement

In the year 2000 Devico launched the DeviDrill wireline system, which is possibly the most important technological improvement on the way to be a successful commercial technology. Devico also developed their own fleet of borehole survey tools, which have added to the the global success of the company.

Building the organization

A great part of Devico’s success is qualified personnel. It does not matter how good a product is if it is left in the hands of unskilled personnel. To make sure that the technology was operated properly, Devico built up its own group of qualified field engineers specializing in Devico tools. Experience from trials during the nineties was tranlated into operational procedures, and an intensive training was established through the Devico School. Field engineers were recruited from the mining institute at university of Sofia in Bulgaria and Trondheim, Norway. The combination of well proven technology and top qualified personnel turned out to be the key to success.
